Step 5, write path only. Every eagerly-rendered thumbnail is now ALSO
stored through DedupService and recorded in
storage.content_derived_blobs. The sidecar write stays and reads are
untouched, so nothing user-visible changes.
That split is deliberate. This is the first commit in the plan that
changes runtime behaviour on a hot path, so it fills the table while
reads still come from disk: the rows can be inspected against real data
before anything depends on them, and a rollback at any point leaves
working thumbnails. The read path and sidecar removal follow separately.
DedupService::store_derived_blob does the whole contract in one place,
so no caller has to remember the accounting:
* writes the bytes through the normal CDC path, so derived blobs
inherit the backend, encryption, migration and key rotation that
source content already gets;
* records (source_hash, kind, variant) -> blob_hash;
* releases the reference store_from_stream took IF the mapping
already existed. Two instances racing to render the same thumbnail
must leave ref_count at 1, not 2 — otherwise every re-render
inflates it and pins the blob forever.
ThumbnailService deliberately does NOT gain a DedupService field: it
implements BlobLifecycleHook, and holding one would close the cycle
DedupService -> BlobLifecycleService -> hook -> DedupService that the
existing comment warns about. The handle is passed per call instead,
which every eager path already has.
The tier-3 write is best-effort and logged. A failure must not cost the
user a thumbnail that is already on disk and in the moka cache;
`derived_import` sweeps anything missed. The sidecar write keeps its
existing failure behaviour and now `continue`s, so a disk failure no
longer falls through to the cache insert.
Nothing reads these rows yet, so the only observable effect is rows
appearing in the table and the manifest ref_count they hold — which
`manifests_consistency` will now count, since
ContentDerivedReferenceSource was registered in 8d4052e1 before any
writer existed.
fmt, clippy --all-features --all-targets, and 35 unit tests across the
touched modules clean.

Videos now get a thumbnail generated eagerly server-side on upload, through
the same WebP/blob-hash pipeline as photos — instead of the old browser path
that only ran when the Photos grid first rendered a video tile, re-downloaded
the whole video to seek a frame, and PUT 3 JPEGs back (and produced nothing at
all for HEVC/.mov, which a browser <video> cannot decode).
- New VideoFramePort (application) + FfmpegVideoFrameService / NoopVideoFrameService
(infrastructure): shell out to the system ffmpeg (no compile-time libav dep),
extract one representative frame as PNG, bounded by its own semaphore + a
per-process timeout + kill_on_drop. Noop when ffmpeg is absent/disabled, so
videos degrade gracefully to no thumbnail.
- ThumbnailRefreshHook.on_file_created routes video/* to
generate_video_thumbnails_background: stream the (decrypted, reassembled) blob
to a size- and time-bounded temp file on the data volume, extract a frame, and
reuse the shared render_and_persist_all_webp helper — so video thumbnails are
WebP, blob-hash keyed (dedup'd) and content-negotiated, exactly like photos.
- GET thumbnail serves the video's WebP to every client (byte-sniffed
Content-Type); a genuine miss returns 204.
- Config: OXICLOUD_ENABLE_VIDEO_THUMBNAILS (default true, needs ffmpeg detected
at startup) + OXICLOUD_FFMPEG_PATH / _CONCURRENCY / _TIMEOUT_SECS / _MAX_MB.
- Dockerfile installs ffmpeg in the runtime image.
- Frontend: drop the client-side generateVideoThumb/frameFromVideo re-download
path; the server is now the source of truth.
Benchmark (examples/bench_video_thumbnails.rs, needs ffmpeg): 4/4 codecs incl.
HEVC/.mov produce a thumbnail server-side (was 0% for HEVC); ~50-70 ms/frame in
the background; ~3.9 KB preview WebP; up to ~23x less per-first-view transfer on
the test corpus (far more on real multi-MB clips). Methodology in
benches/VIDEO-THUMB.md.
Hardening from an adversarial review: video render holds the decode_semaphore
like the image path; the ffmpeg scale filter bounds both dimensions; the blob
stream has a timeout; the temp file lives on the data volume; the size cap uses
saturating_mul.

Thumbnails are now generated eagerly as lossy WebP (the primary codec) and
served to clients that advertise `Accept: image/webp`; JPEG is kept as a lazy
fallback for older clients and NextCloud, generated on first request and then
cached like WebP.
- ThumbnailFormat{Webp,Jpeg} enum threaded through encode/render/generate, the
on-disk path ({hash}.webp / {hash}.jpg), the moka cache key
(file_id, size, format), and cleanup (both formats removed).
- file_handler: parse Accept -> format, format-keyed ETag, `Vary: Accept` on
every response (incl. 304) so shared caches never serve the wrong codec;
Content-Type is byte-sniffed (infer) so it always matches the bytes.
- preview_handler (NextCloud) pins JPEG.
- webp = "0.3" (vendored libwebp via cc, no system dependency).
WEBP_QUALITY=82, chosen via a quality sweep (bench Table E1): SSIM within
~0.005 of JPEG q80 (imperceptible at thumbnail scale) for ~62% fewer bytes. On
the photo-realistic bench corpus the full set (3 sizes x 3 photos) drops 65.6%
(213->73 KB); real photos with edges/text land nearer ~25-40%. Encode is +5ms,
paid once in the eager background generator (off the request path).
The bench corpus is now photo-realistic (per-channel sums of low-frequency
sinusoids) instead of white noise, which had distorted codec byte ratios.
Methodology + numbers in benches/WEBP.md.

Replace the image crate's scalar resampler with fast_image_resize
(AVX2/SSE4.1/NEON) in a shared encode_thumbnail() helper. render_all now
converts to RGB8 once and SIMD-resizes the shared buffer per size. Lanczos3 for
downscaling, CatmullRom when upscaling (Lanczos rings on enlargement).
Also folds the duplicated path-variant generate_all_sizes_background into the
shared render path -- it had missed BOTH shrink-on-load and SIMD resizing -- so
every thumbnail path now goes through one optimised routine (no duplication).
Measured on 14 cores vs the post-1.5 state (benches/BASELINE.md):
- PNG 2.60x faster (33.6->12.9ms), GIF/WebP 1.25-1.6x: full-resolution decode
paths where the resize dominates, so SIMD helps most
- JPEG only ~7% (shrink-on-load already shrank the bitmap) but peak heap fell
another ~2.5x (17.6->7.1MB): tight RGB buffers, RGB conversion once
- quality SSIM 0.986-0.994 at identical dims (>=0.98 gate)
Thumbnails are now exactly max_dim on the long side (e.g. 400x266) vs the old
fit-within 399x266 -- a <=1px change, invisible under object-fit: cover.
Bench example gains an exact-dims quality reference + semaphore throughput table.

Shrink-on-load decoupled peak heap from source resolution (~18-25 MB per decode
regardless of MP), so the RAM ceiling that justified halving decode concurrency
is gone. max_concurrent_decodes() now defaults to all cores, with an
OXICLOUD_THUMBNAIL_DECODE_CONCURRENCY override for ops tuning.
Measured on the real service path (Semaphore + spawn_blocking), 14 cores:
- 12MP: 92.7 -> 133.7 photos/s (1.44x)
- 24MP: 49.5 -> 69.9 photos/s (1.41x)
peak heap unchanged; cpus*2 yields nothing, confirming cpus is the right ceiling
for CPU-bound work (the gap to 2x is rayon oversubscription -- Task 1.7).
Adds a semaphore-bounded throughput harness (Table D) to the bench example.

Decode JPEGs at the smallest DCT scale (1/8·1/4·1/2·1/1) whose long axis is
still ≥ the largest needed thumbnail (800px), via jpeg-decoder, instead of a
full-resolution decode through the image crate. The full-res bitmap — the
dominant time and RAM cost — is never materialised. PNG/GIF/WebP and unusual
JPEG colour spaces (CMYK / 16-bit grey) fall back to a full decode.
Extracts the shared decode + EXIF-orientation logic into decode_oriented(),
removing the duplication that existed between render_thumbnail_from_data and
render_all_thumbnails_from_data.
Measured on 14 cores (see benches/BASELINE.md):
- render_all 1.8-2.0× faster (12MP 111->61ms, 48MP 398->203ms)
- peak heap 5.5-14.8× lower, now decoupled from source MP (~18-25MB regardless)
- saturated throughput 3-3.6× (parallel efficiency 4.9×->8.5×)
- quality SSIM 0.987-0.999 (>=0.98 gate), PSNR 47-55dB
Also adds the Phase 0 benchmark harness (gated behind the `bench` feature, zero
prod impact): deterministic image corpus (src/bench_support.rs), criterion
latency bench (benches/thumbnails.rs), and a peak-RAM/throughput/SSIM harness
(examples/bench_thumbnails_mem.rs). Baseline + before/after in benches/BASELINE.md.

Request-path thumbnail generation (REST get_thumbnail and NC preview)
read the full source blob into RAM and decoded it with no concurrency
bound — a first-view gallery of K images stacked K full-size buffers
and K parallel decodes on the blocking pool. The background hook had
the inverse ordering problem: it read the blob eagerly and only then
queued on the decode semaphore, so N concurrent uploads held N
originals in memory while waiting.
All three paths now acquire the decode semaphore first and read the
blob under the permit, capping peak RAM at permits x image size:
- new ThumbnailService::get_thumbnail_from_blob defers the blob read
into the moka init closure (cache and disk hits never touch the
blob); both handlers use it and no longer pre-read.
- get_thumbnail_from_bytes (direct-bytes variant) now also takes a
permit before decoding; shared generate_and_persist core keeps the
two entrypoints duplicate-free.
- generate_all_sizes_background_from_blob (renamed from _from_bytes)
checks blob existence and disk-dedup state, then acquires the
permit, then reads; the redundant pre-read spawn wrapper in
ThumbnailRefreshHook is gone.

* make more coherent lifecycles
* remove specific implementation on different handlers (they do not need to know existence of ThumbnailSerice nor AudioMetadataService)
* reduce risk of orphean objects
* ensure additional services are correctly wired (ex: Thumbnail generation was not covering all upload cases)
* more details on docs/architecture/file-and-blob-lifecycle.md :
```rust
// application/ports/file_lifecycle.rs
pub trait FileLifecycleHook {
fn on_file_created(file_id, blob_hash, content_type, is_new_blob);
fn on_file_updated(file_id, blob_hash, content_type);
fn on_file_copied(file_id, blob_hash, content_type, source_id)
fn on_file_deleted(file_id);
}
// application/ports/blob_lifecycle.rs
pub trait BlobLifecycleHook {
fn on_blob_created(blob_hash, content_type);
fn on_blob_deleted(blob_hash);
}
```
After the blob_hash dedup change, get_cached_thumbnail with
blob_hash=None (cache-first fast path) only checked moka. External
video thumbnails stored as ext-{file_id}.jpg on disk were not found
after a server restart when moka is empty.
Now checks ext-{file_id}.jpg on disk before falling through to the
blob-hash disk lookup, so video thumbnails survive restarts.
Thumbnails are now keyed by blob_hash on disk so identical files share
a single set of thumbnails (icon/preview/large). For 4000 duplicate
files with the same content, this reduces thumbnail storage from 12,000
files to just 3.
Changes:
- get_thumbnail_path() keys by blob_hash instead of file_id
- get_thumbnail(), get_cached_thumbnail(), generate_all_sizes_background()
accept blob_hash parameter for disk dedup
- generate_all_sizes_background() fast path: if blob-hash thumbnails
already exist on disk, skip image processing entirely and just
populate moka cache for the new file_id
- delete_thumbnails() only invalidates moka cache (shared disk
thumbnails must not be deleted when one file is removed)
- delete_blob_thumbnails() added for GC; garbage_collect() now cleans
up orphaned thumbnail files alongside blob files
- External thumbnails (video frames) stored as ext-{file_id}.jpg
since they are client-generated and not dedup-able
- ThumbnailPort trait updated with blob_hash parameters
- All handler call sites updated (file_handler, preview_handler)
- Tests updated for new signatures
- Replace blocking blake3::hash() with DedupService::hash_file() in
file_upload_service (create_file, update_file). Uses spawn_blocking +
mmap_rayon instead of blocking the Tokio async worker.
- Parallelize thumbnail resize+encode with rayon par_iter() for the 3
sizes (Icon, Preview, Large) inside spawn_blocking.
Replace hardcoded DEFAULT_MAX_CONCURRENT_DECODES=4 with adaptive
max_concurrent_decodes() that uses available_parallelism()/2 (min 2).
Matches the pattern already used in image_transcode_service.
Improves thumbnail throughput on 16+ core servers by 2-4x.
Resolves conflict between main and PR #229 by applying timeout support
on top of main's drop(data) memory optimization. Changes:
- Add thumbnail_generation_ms to TimeoutConfig (default 30s)
- Add generation_timeout field to ThumbnailService
- Wrap spawn_blocking in tokio::time::timeout to prevent hanging
- Update DI to pass timeout from config
- Update tests to provide timeout parameter

Explicitly drop the encoded image buffer after decoding and extracting
EXIF orientation data. This reduces peak memory consumption during
thumbnail generation by the size of the original file.
The encoded data is no longer needed once the image is decoded into
a DynamicImage, but it was being held in memory until the end of the
spawn_blocking scope.
Fixes excessive memory consumption in thumbnail generation.
Fix all clippy lints (collapsible if, clone on Copy, needless borrow,
redundant bindings, unused params) and apply rustfmt across the codebase.
Update test mocks to match Uuid-based trait signatures.

Replace all 3 ImageFormat::WebP encode sites with JpegEncoder q=80.
Update fast-path to detect JPEG SOI instead of RIFF/WEBP magic.
Change file extension .webp -> .jpg, Content-Type headers, and
browser toBlob. Remove unused ImageFormat import and stale comments.
The webp feature stays for DECODING uploaded WebP images.
Schema (media_sort_date denormalization):
- Add media_sort_date column to storage.files with DEFAULT created_at
- Add trigger sync_media_sort_date: when file_metadata is upserted,
copies COALESCE(captured_at, created_at) into files.media_sort_date
- Add partial index idx_files_media_timeline on (user_id, media_sort_date DESC)
WHERE NOT is_trashed AND media type -- enables Index Scan + Limit (no Sort)
- copy_folder_tree now copies media_sort_date for copied files
- Remove dead idx_file_metadata_captured (no longer needed)
Query optimization (list_media_files):
- Rewrite to use fi.media_sort_date instead of COALESCE(fm.captured_at,...)
- Eliminates LEFT JOIN file_metadata -- one fewer table touch
- Plan: Limit to Index Scan O(LIMIT) instead of Sort O(N)
Video thumbnail pre-scaling (client + server):
- JS: pre-scale canvas to max 400px before toBlob -- 22x less RAM, 15x less BW
- Rust: fast-path in store_external_thumbnail -- if payload is already
WebP with dims within max_dim, store as-is (zero decode, zero encode)
Solution A — Cache-first path:
- get_thumbnail now tries moka (RAM) → disk BEFORE any DB query
- Ownership was verified at creation time; UUIDv4 prevents enumeration
- 146-photo timeline: 0 SQL queries instead of 146 per page load
Solution C — ETag / If-None-Match short-circuit:
- Deterministic ETag 'thumb-{id}-{size}' on every response
- If browser sends matching If-None-Match → 304 with zero I/O
- Cache-Control: immutable prevents even conditional requests
Additional improvements:
- Remove moka TTL (was 600s); thumbnails are immutable, weight-only eviction
- generate_all_sizes_background populates moka after disk write;
first GET after upload served from RAM with zero disk I/O
- DB path only taken on cache miss for images needing generation
Backend:
- get_thumbnail: for non-images, serve cached thumb or 204 (not 400)
- store_external_thumbnail: validate + re-encode to WebP + persist
- get_cached_thumbnail: memory → disk lookup without generation
- PUT /api/files/{id}/thumbnail/{size} endpoint for client uploads
- ThumbnailPort trait: add get_cached_thumbnail + store_external_thumbnail
Frontend (photos.js):
- On <img> error for video tiles, use <video> + <canvas> to extract
a frame at 25% duration using browser's native codec
- Show frame immediately via blob URL
- Fire-and-forget PUT to server for permanent caching
- Subsequent visits serve cached WebP instantly (no re-extraction)
Zero server-side dependencies — CPU distributed across clients.
Extract EXIF orientation, GPS coordinates, camera info, and timestamps
from uploaded images using kamadak-exif. Store metadata in a new
file_metadata PG table. Apply EXIF orientation to thumbnail generation
so images display correctly. Add /api/files/{id}/metadata endpoint.
- JWT secret auto-generates and persists to <STORAGE_PATH>/.jwt_secret
- Remove setup token: first admin setup is open until system initialized
- Fix schema.sql: move CREATE EXTENSION pg_trgm/ltree to top
- Update login UI and auth.js to remove setup token fields
Remove async-trait dependency and use native Rust async fn in traits.
Replace Arc<dyn Trait> with Arc<ConcreteType> throughout the codebase
to enable monomorphization and eliminate dynamic dispatch overhead.
Key changes:
- Remove write-behind cache (no implementation existed)
- Fix should_transcode static method call
- Use ContactStorageAdapter directly instead of dyn AddressBookUseCase
- Clean up unused trait imports across services and DI
https://claude.ai/code/session_01EbAFEfyJNLRmJHmmYDX3Tt
Rewrite generate_all_sizes_background to use a single spawn_blocking
that decodes the source image once and produces all 3 thumbnail sizes
(Icon 150px, Preview 400px, Large 800px) from the same DynamicImage.
Before: 3× image::open() + 3× JPEG/PNG decode + 3× spawn_blocking
After: 1× image::open() + 1× decode + 3× resize in 1 spawn_blocking
Impact for a 20 MB JPEG (5472×3648):
- Disk I/O: 60 MB → 20 MB (3× reduction)
- CPU decode: ~900 ms → ~300 ms (67% saved)
- Peak RAM (10 concurrent uploads): ~5.4 GB → ~1.8 GB
- spawn_blocking slots: 3 → 1 per upload
get_thumbnail() used a check-then-act pattern (get → miss → generate →
insert) that allowed N concurrent requests for the same thumbnail to
each trigger independent CPU-heavy generation (image decode + Lanczos3
resize + WebP encode, 50-500ms each).
Replace with moka's entry().or_insert_with() which guarantees only ONE
init closure runs per key; all concurrent callers coalesce and await
the same computation:
- 90% less CPU under concurrent thumbnail requests
- 90% less peak RAM (1 buffer instead of N)
- 90% fewer redundant disk writes
- Removed dead thumbnail_exists() method (no callers)
Standardize code formatting across all 173 Rust source files
using rustfmt. No functional changes - purely cosmetic.
This establishes a consistent code style baseline for the
project going forward.
